Virgil William Wakefield
Virgil was born Jan 20, 1931 in Minco to the late William Henry and Mamie Ethel (Smith) Wakefield. He died Thursday, Dec 3, 2015 in Oklahoma City, at the age of 84 years 10 months & 13 days. Virgil & the late Mildred K (Hurt) Wakefield were married on Jun 6, 1953 at the Trinity Baptist Church in El Reno. She preceded him in death on Feb 11, 2015. Virgil was also preceded in death by one son, Dennis Lee Wakefield.
Virgil grew up in Minco and was a 1949 graduate of El Reno High School. He joined the United States Air Force in January of 1951 and was stationed at Shepard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX, where he served as a Staff Sargent during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged in January of 1955, the young couple moved home to El Reno. From El Reno, they moved to Yukon for a few years prior to settling in Mustang for 23 years. In 1989, they moved to the Sulphur area to enjoy their retirement. In his spare time, Virgil enjoyed carpentry and wood working, as well as fishing. He was a faithful member of the Chickasaw Trail Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon.
Survivors include son, Randy Wakefield of Prague; sister, Eileen King; two sisters-in-law, Gwen Luschen of Prague and Una Miller & husband Charles of Mansfield, TX; as well as “a truck load” of nieces & nephews.
