Funeral services for Roger Wayne Kite will be held 10:00AM, Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Sulphur, with Pastor Dick Terry officiating. Interment will be held at 3:00PM that afternoon at the Coalgate Cemetery.
Roger was born, the only child of the late Haskell & Geraldine (Garrett) Kite, on April 29, 1937, in Ada, OK. He entered eternal rest on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, in Sulphur, at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 8 days. Roger and the former Ms. Ernestine Graham were united in marriage on May 3, 1957, in Ada.
Roger grew up in Coalgate, graduating from Coalgate High School, Class of 1955. After high school, he attended Oklahoma State University. Prior to graduating from OSU, Roger and Ernestine moved to Montana where he coached for several years, prior to returning to Oklahoma and completing his bachelor’s degree at East Central University. After earning a degree in education, Roger spent several years teaching and coaching at Panama and Roff schools. In addition to coaching, Roger spent 32 years in the oil and gas industry, co-owning Kite Oil of Stigler and McAlister with his father, and K&K Oil Company in Poteau.
Although coaching and the oil business were a vital part of Roger’s career, his most cherished and enjoyed career was being a rancher. His life in ranching afforded him the opportunity to own ranches in several locations, including Sulphur, Mill Creek, Joy, Hickory, Roff and Stigler. His years of ranching led him to become a highly respected cattleman and create countless friendships.
Roger was a very straightforward, man’s man. He always said what he thought and stood by his decisions or opinions, no matter the consequences. His loyalty to his family and friends was unwavering. Roger was known to be quick-witted and a bit stubborn. He was constantly picking at or pranking his friends and family. It was his way of saying he loved or liked you. One of Roger’s most favorite daily routines was visiting the local coffee shops to find out the latest happenings of Murray County.
Throughout his life, Roger received several achievement awards including being chosen as Conference Coach of the Year in Montana and Murray County Cattleman of the Year. He was also selected to serve on the National Beef Council and the American Farm & Ranchers Board. Roger was a devoted member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Sulphur.
In younger years, he enjoyed hunting elk, deer and bears in Montana and Colorado. He and Ernestine enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Roger will forever be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted friend. The impact he made on others is truly everlasting.
Those left to carry on Roger’s legacy include his beloved wife, Ernestine; daughter, Rhonda Fields & husband Wendall, of Sulphur; two grandsons, Josh Fields & wife Ashleigh of Edmond, and Jace Fields & fiancé Thalia of Bali, Indonesia; and his three great-grandchildren, Kaden, Jackson, and Karleigh Kay Fields.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial be made in Roger’s memory to the First Free Will Baptist Church of Sulphur, or to the Murray County Junior Livestock Show Scholarship fund.
