Steve Miller, 89, of Sulphur, boarded his final heavenly train ride Sunday, April 20, 2025, in Sulphur. Steve was born April 6th, 1936, in Troy New York and raised by his parents Charles and Phyllis Miller of Seal Harbor Maine. He grew up on the island working for his father at Miller Gardens, helping maintain many estates around the island including the Rockefeller estate. After graduating high school, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served honorably during the Korean War aboard the USS Barton as a Fire Control Technician. At the end of his enlistment, Steve returned home and earned his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Maine. In 1959 he began his 35-year career with the National Park Service at Acadia National Park in Maine.
Steve married Helen Kathleen Miller on May 16th, 1964, in Seal Harbor Maine. Together, Steve and Helen traveled to different National Park assignments over a 10-year span until 1975 when he accepted a position at Platt National Park in Sulphur. Upon his retirement in 1994 he was recognized as the last Chief Ranger of Platt National Park and the first Chief Ranger of Chickasaw National Recreation Area. His years of public service continued after retirement serving his church, building the new Methodist church, as an active member of his church disaster relief team, and helping those in need.
Steve had a passion for all things railroad and had an extensive model railroad layout. He enjoyed train watching, hunting, golfing, and traveling. Steve was a Scout Master in Davis, Sulphur Elks Lodge member and officer, and Terlingua chili cookoff champion. His final months were spent as a resident of the Sulphur VA Center. His family wishes to express their thanks to all the staff at the VA center for the care they provided Steve and for making him feel like family.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Helen Kathleen Miller, his son and daughter in law, Thomas and Pastor Lisa Miller, his two grandchildren Denver and Austin Miller, his granddaughter-in-law Dr. Stormie Thompson, and grandson-in-law Acaelus Contreres.
Services will be held Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at the Sulphur Cornerstone Methodist Church. Inurnment will take place at the Seal Harbor Maine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial gifts be in the form of donations to the Cornerstone Methodist Food Pantry.
Arrangements are "entrusted to" Hale's Funeral Home of Davis/Sulphur.
