Michael Jay "Mike" Otis, Sr.

Graveside services, with full military honors, for Michael Jay “Mike” Otis, Sr. will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, January 23, 2020, at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur, with Chaplain Larry Combs officiating.

Mike was born April 7, 1943 in Raymondville, TX to the late Earl and Florence (Price) Otis. He died Sunday, January 19, 2020 in Oklahoma City, at the age of 76 years.

Mike grew up in the Scullin Community, East of Sulphur. He was a 1960 graduate of Hickory High School. On July 13, 1961, he joined the United States Air Force at the Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. While proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War, Mike received numerous medals and recognitions, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Combat Readiness Medal. On July 31, 1981, Mike received an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, retiring with 20+ years of service to our country.

During his retirement years, Mike devoted much of his time supporting and assisting his fellow Servicemen. He volunteered at several Veteran’s Centers, was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, served as the treasurer for the American Legion for some 20 years, and spent countless hours simply visiting and lending an ear to those who needed to be heard. Mike was truly a servant. He not only served the military of his beloved country, he also served as a volunteer fireman in Rockport, TX, the Roff Fire Department, as well as the Hickory Fire Department. Mike was continuously serving others, no matter where he was.

In addition to serving others, Mike was forever loving and generous to his family. He cherished each of his family members and made sure they were each taken care of. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Mike was an avid fan of NASCAR.

Survivors include three children, April Weisler & husband Louis of Sulphur, OK, Melody Sutton & husband Jason of Wayland, IA and Michael Jay Otis, Jr and wife Micheale of Fulton, TX; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; as well as three siblings, Annette Doolan of Sulphur, Elmer Leroy Otis & wife Shelia of Davis and Terry Lynn Otis of Scullin.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Brandon Robinson and Sarah Jane Fowler; one sister, Reba Mae Erwin; and three brothers, Earl McAllen “Sonny” Otis, William Mason “Bill” Otis and John Everett Otis.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Wednesday evening, January 22, 2020, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Sulphur Veteran’s Center, 304 East Fairlane Ave, Sulphur, OK 73086, attention Residents Benefit Account.
