Melody Evelyn Kay, or Gramma Kay as she was known to many, was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother during her incredible 82 years of life. She passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025.
Melody was born on July 5, 1942, in Inglewood, CA to Doris and John E. Holmes. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest where she had her four children and raised them before the family moved to Soldotna, AK.
In 1997, she met Ronald Garland online and flew to Painesville, Ohio to be with him and never looked back. Ron became her best friend and partner for life. She loved watching all sports and once in Ohio, turned to be a dedicated Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan.
If there was a commercial about it, she had to buy it; she always had the newest gadgets. Melody loved playing computer games (namely Everquest) and could get lost for hours on them. However, her true love and greatest hobby was sewing and crafting. She had a sewing room wherever she lived and spent hours making crafts and clothes to share with her family.
Melody worked from home as a medical transcriptionist up until her retirement.
After retirement she and Ron bought an RV, and she became a great copilot directing them on their next camping trip with their cat Jasspurr. They enjoyed life on the road before they finally settled in Oklahoma.
One of her greatest joys in life was becoming a Gramma to her seven grandchildren. She became known as Gramma Kay to many who loved her. Her "littles" were her eight great-grandchildren who she loved more than anything.
She will be missed greatly by her friends and family.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Doris and John E. Holmes, brother John Holmes, and partner Ronald Garland.
She is survived by her four children, Scott Kay of Thailand, Kevin Kay of Soldotna, AK, Shawn and Amy Kay of Kenai, AK, and Robin and Johnny Gannon of Davis, OK; seven grandchildren, Karli Lopez and Ernesto of Anchorage, AK, Trista and Derrick Hunt of Ardmore, OK, Jonathon and Arlin Gannon of Ardmore, OK, Austin Kay of Valdez, AK, Kelli Kay of Soldotna, AK, Shaleen Kay of Soldotna, AK, and Callie Sahl of Tempe, AZ; step grandchildren, Parker Maddox, Julia Horstman and Kyle Ross; her eight great-grandchildren Corbin, Mia, Jetson, Baker, Connor, Colter, Quin, and Leo; and so many other friends and family that were near and dear to her.
