Mary Caroline Smith

Mary Smith, 93, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014 in Knoxville, TN. She was born north of Ft. Arbuckle, on Dec 16, 1920 to David Brown & Lottie (Johnston) Cone. Mary grew up west of Davis as a child and went to Woodland School and Davis School until the 11th grade. She married the love of her life, Ross “Jimmy” Smith Jr. on Dec 9, 1939 in Coalgate, OK. Mary and Ross Jr. met at a church function when she was 16. They stated courting and married when she was 18. They lived near his parent’s home to help his father with farming. Ross Jr. went into dairy work and sold milk to the cheese factory in Sulphur, OK.

During World War II, they moved to Oklahoma City where Ross worked for Douglas Aircraft in the sheet metal department. After the war, Mary and Ross came back to their hometown and later purchased a farm west of Davis. They were married for 67 years until Ross’s death in 2006. Mary and Ross farmed and ranched west of Davis for over 58 years before moving to Davis in 1996. Mary moved to Knoxville, TN in 2011 to be near her daughter and family.

Mary was an active member of the Davis Methodist Church for 65 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 17 years and member of the choir for many years. She was a charter member of the Anna Circle of the Women’s Society of Christian Service.
She was preceded in death by husband Ross “Jimmy” Smith Jr.; son, James Everett Smith; daughter, Janice Jo Smith; parents, David & Lottie Cone; brothers, Glen, Alfred & James “Bud” Cone; sister, Thelma Mabry; and nephew Glen “Buck” Cone.

Mary is survived by daughter Sue Petrie & husband James of Knoxville, TN.; grandsons, Chris Smith of Edmond, OK., Dr. Mark Smith & wife Traci of Springfield, MO., Jay Guinn & wife Michelle of Conroe, TX., and Toby Scott Guinn of Sarasota, FL.; granddaughter Jami Moseley & husband Bill of Fort Collins, CO.; great-grandchildren Parker & Aubrey Smith of Edmond, OK., Mason & Morgan Guinn of Conroe, TX., William & Katie Moseley of Fort Collins, CO.; nephews Dr. Glenn Cunningham & wife Camille of Houston, TX., Phil Cunningham of Kihei, HI., Kenneth Smith & wife Carol of Paoli, OK and David Cone & wife Laura of Clovis, CA.; nieces Brenda Kehrer & husband Miles of Davis, OK., Barbara Maye of Fort Worth, TX., Wanda Barnes & husband Wes of Antioch, CA., Debbie Green & husband Roger, of Bakersfield, CA., Teresa Barnett & husband Craig of Bakersfield, CA., and Alfreda Worsham & husband Gary of Visalia, CA, Mary is held in loving remembrance by her son’s widow, Alberta Smith Williams & husband John and their family of Muskogee, OK.

Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Dr. Mark Smith, Jay Guinn, Parker Smith, William Moseley and Mason Guinn. Honorary bearers will be Jimmy Salter, Joe Pirkle, Bob Drake, Gene Hester, Gerald Goodson and Bob Johnson.
