Leo J. Carthel
Leo was born Nov 1, 1923 in Lockney, TX to the late Ross and Maude Carthel. He died Monday, Oct 1, 2012 in Hennepin, at the age of 88 years and 11 months. Leo and Corrine U. Martin were married on Mar 18, 1949 in Albuquerque, NM. She preceded him in death on Sept 3, 2011.
Leo Carthel never met a stranger and was truly blessed with the “gift of gab”. He made conversation with everyone; making sure they knew what he was thinking and how he felt on the matter. Although Leo may have appeared loud and gruff, at heart he was truly a meek, mild friend of man, with a very caring and giving soul.
After graduating from high school, Leo served in the US Army during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific. After his service to our country, he spent 60+ years working as a roofer. Leo was quite the trader. One never knew what he was going to come home with from his recent trade. In his earlier days he enjoyed coon hunting and fishing.
Survivors include daughters, Paulette Sandefur of Hennepin and Charlene Hornberger of St. Lois, MO; three grandchildren, Tanya Shipley, Terry Sandefur and Randy Bevill; as well as several great grandchildren.
