John was born May 6, 1928 in Yale, OK to the late Richard & Mary (Quarter) Shumaker. He died Wednesday, Jan 16, 2013 in Ardmore, at the age of 84 years 8 months & 10 days. John and Dorothy Ayers were married on May 2, 1953 in Gainesville, TX.
John grew up in Yale, where he attended school. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, joining in Oct 1950 and receiving an Honorable Discharge on Oct 24, 1952. Most of his working career was spent as a Rough Neck in the oilfield industry. From 1971 to 1976, John owned & operated Shumaker’s Conoco Station in Davis. Most recently, he worked as a crossing guard for the Davis Public School System until his health forced him to retire.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy; son, John Stephen Shumaker of Marietta, OK; granddaughter, Terria Parson & husband Matt of Gainesville, TX; two great-grandchildren, Waymon & Lily; brother-in-law, Joe Tom Ayers & wife Dana of Davis; brother, Richard Shumaker of Okmulgee; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Carpenter of Oklahoma City & Marjorie Botts of Irving, TX.
John was preceded in death by his daughter, Candy Shumaker.
