James Douglas “Jim” Lance


Jim was born January 14, 1933 in Dougherty to the late Madison Snowbird & Cleo Beatrice (Autry) Lance, Sr. He died Monday, June 16, 2014 in Oklahoma City, at the age of 81. Jim and Margaret “Margie” Allen were married on October 23, 1955 in Gainesville, TX. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2012. Others preceding Jim in death include three sisters, Laticia Denise, Alene & Myrtle; as wells as four brothers, Bird, Jr, Billy George, Sonny Boy and Frank Loyd.

Jim grew up in Dougherty where he graduated from high school in 1949, at the age of 16. He attended East Central University, where he received a Bachelor Degree in Education. Jim later attended the University of Oklahoma where he worked on his Master’s Degree. He severed in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from March 1953 until he was honorably discharged in March 1955.

Throughout Jim’s working career he held several jobs and positions. Early in his career he taught public education at several schools including Wayne, Wanette, Caddo & Sulphur. Jim, being quite the entrepreneur, owned and operated the several businesses, including the Lance Motel in Sulphur for many years. Prior to his retirement in 2008, Jim spent 22 years as an Employment Counselor for the Big Five Community Services. He spent 15 years in city government for the City of Sulphur, serving several terms as Mayor. Jim will forever be remembered as a loyal, true friend. From the highest of the highest to the lowest of the lowest, Jim Lance was a friend to all.

Survivors include one daughter, Kelly S. Lance of Sulphur; one son, James A. Lance of Sulphur; one granddaughter, Kylie E. Lance of Rhode Island; five sisters, Mary Hirst, Helen Crawford, Tahwanna B. Turner, Patsy Trail and LaDonna Kay Chaffin; as well as numerous nieces & nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Butch Hill, Tim Colbert, Jerry Charles Birch, Mickey Warren, Paul Aaron & Brent Aaron. Honorary bearers will be Charles Birch, Doug Grubbs, Ray Giddens, Jim Britt, Perry Frantz, J.D. Voto, Sam Jones & Don Pinkston.
