Harrel "Biggon" Akers
Harrel Akers, better known by family and friends as "Biggon," was born October 4, 1934, in Dougherty, to the late Johnnie Oscar and Alta Mae (Hale) Akers. He died on Monday, May 27, 2024, in Davis, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 23 days. Biggon and the late Hildagard "Hilda" Huster were united in marriage on July 14, 1959, in Baumholder, Germany. From this marriage were born three daughters, Kathy, Karen, and Dian.
Biggon grew up in Dougherty. At the age of sixteen, he joined the United States Army. His service began at Ft. Sill, OK, prior to being stationed in Germany. He served during the Korean Conflict, as well as did combat duty during the Vietnam War. In 1977, after 27 years of loyal service to our country, Biggon retired, receiving an Honorable Discharge.
After retiring from the Army, Biggon and Hilda made their home in Oklahoma City, prior to returning home to Dougherty in December 1980. He spent several years working for Haliburton and Dolese Brothers. Because of the knowledge learned in the Army, Biggon spent much of his time doing home remodels and electrical work around Dougherty, earning him the title as "the town handyman." Being a service minded individual, Biggon also devoted 25+ years to the Dougherty Town Council, serving in various positions including Mayor, Councilman, Water Superintendent and Clerk/Treasure.
Biggon loved being outdoors. He enjoyed hunting every chance he could find and piddling in his shop. Each Christmas, he made sure that everything in his yard that could be lit with Christmas lights was lit up. Biggon was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He cherished spending time with his family.
