On January 17, 2021, Edward Earl Miller of Sulphur passed away at the age of 97 years.
Edward was born May 9, 1923 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Hugh F Miller and Mary Ellen Mann.
In October 1941, Edward enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, serving during World War II until his discharge in July 1944. He served throughout the South Pacific including Samoa, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, New Zealand, and New Caledonia while attached to the Second Battalion - Third Marine Division and the 2nd Marine Brigade.
On December 11th, 1943 Edward married Nellie Alma Grems in Santa Cruz, California. Edward and Nellie had 6 children: Sharon, Hugh, David, Marvin, Edward Jr, and Linda. Nellie passed away on September 23rd, 1983 after 40 years of marriage.
Edward married Naomi Inez Moore on March 6th, 1984 in Gainesville, Texas. Naomi had two sons, Billy Jack & Donald Ray Moore who Ed loved as his own sons. Naomi passed on May 8th, 2008 after 24 years of marriage.
Edward was a Watchmaker by trade, having his own jewelry store in both Ardmore and Sulphur. He enjoyed traveling, photography, short wave radio, listening to Merle Haggard, Tom T Hall, and watching television shows such as Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune & 60 Minutes. Edward also volunteered with Cub Scouts, taking his grandson Scott and his friends on father and son campouts at Camp Simpson, and helping to build many pinewood derby cars.
Edward’s favorite poem, that he quoted from often, was “The House by The Side of The Road” by Sam Walter Foss. His favorite line was “Let me live in my house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” He always had words of advice drawn from his storied and diverse life and enjoyed talking with anyone he happened to meet. He truly never met a stranger. Rest easy Pop, we love you.
Edward was preceded in death by his mother Mary, and father Hugh, sisters Louise and Pearl, and brother Burl, his wives Nellie and Naomi, his sons Hugh, David, Marvin, Edward Jr, and daughters Sharon and Linda.
Edward is survived by Don and Melissa Moore of Sulphur, Billy Jack and Kathryn Moore of Union South Carolina, Marjorie Miller of Louisville KY, Carolyn Smead of Odessa TX, Grandchildren Scott & Catheren Miller, Steven & Mindy Miller, Laura Miller, Jill & Chasen Lambe, Desray & Kevin Little, Marvin & Julie Moore, Marty Moore, Brandy Moore, Michelle & John James, Shannon & Kevin Hill, Great-Grandchildren Andrew, Sarah, and Michael Miller, Jackson & Madelyn Miller, and many other Great Grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2pm on Friday, January 22nd at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur, OK under the direction of Hale’s Funeral Home of Sulphur.
