Ed Loin Porter was born January 13, 1921 in Bokchito, Oklahoma to a Black Dutch father, Joseph Lynn Porter and Choctaw mother, Fannie Belle Brackett. He died in Sulphur, Oklahoma on December 10, 2011 at the age of 90.
At the Young age of 17, Ed joined the United States Navy where he spent the next seven years of his life. Ed served on the USS Lexington as a Torpedo man when it was sunk after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He then survived a second sinking while stationed on the USS Ommaney Bay. He left the US Navy with an Honorable Discharge was Chief Torpedo man. He was decorated with many medals while serving his country. Ed wrote a book relating to his life and including his Navy experiences.
Upon leaving the Navy, Ed became a self employed Life Planner and Insurance Agent in San Diego, California. After 40 years of being in the business, a car accident caused him to retire. Ed enjoyed his flowers, friends and family. He also was a strong advocate of the Organ Donor Program.
Ed is survived by his loving niece, Sondra Carley and Husband, Doug of Pensacola, Florida; great nieces, Autumn Claxton and her husband, William, of Sulphur and Tori Rich and her husband, Jim, of Midland, Texas. He is also survived by his niece, Paula, and her husband, Howard, and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Lynn Porter; and sisters, Geneva and Pauline.
