Dorothy Strong Jameson

July 20, 1923 — March 6, 2020

Dorothy Strong Jameson of Davis passed away March 6, 2020 at the age of 96. She was born July 20, 1923 to Cy and Bertha Strong. She grew up on her family’s ranch north of Boise City, Oklahoma, and attended the one-room Garrett School through 8th Grade. She then attended Boise City High School where she was a star athlete, part of a basketball team that went to the State Tournament, and was selected as an All-State forward, even though she played guard for her team.
After high school, Dorothy attended Panhandle State A&M before transferring to Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University), where she joined the Chi Omega Sorority. While pursuing her degree in Home Economics Education, she was also very active in intra-mural athletics, becoming the first non-physical education major to be named Outstanding Woman Athlete on campus.
Dorothy’s first job after college was as a Home Extension Agent in Tucumcari, New Mexico. She then married Roger Jameson and moved to the Jameson Ranch between Davis and Sulphur, where she began to raise a family – her son John and daughter Judy.
In the early 1950s, Dorothy was asked to teach Vocational Agriculture at Davis High School when the teacher became ill. Thereafter, she was hired to fill a vacancy as Vocational Home Economics teacher and sponsor for Future Homemakers of America (FHA). She continued at this position, with a short break to add son Bill to the family, until 1976 when she took a leave of absence.
Newly single, Dorothy was soon ready to return to teaching, but her former position in the high school had been filled. So, she went back to school for her Elementary teaching certificate and began working in the Davis Elementary School, eventually moving to Middle School until her retirement in 1989. Not long after retiring, she was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Davis School Board. After serving her term, she was asked to come out of retirement to develop a curriculum for and teach Middle School Home Economics. She did so, until she fell in love and married long-time friend Laron Quaid, who predeceased her in 2005.
Dorothy was a stalwart member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Sulphur, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Elder, and member of the Board, including a term as Chairperson. She was a charter member of the Davis Akomda Club as well as being a loving mother and grandmother, a dedicated teacher, and an inspiration to all who knew her.
Dorothy is survived by son and daughter-in-law John and Cathy Jameson of Davis, daughter and son-in-law Judy and Jim Moses of Oklahoma City and son Bill Jameson of Davis; grandchildren Brett Jameson of Stillwater, Meagan Moses of Brooklyn, NY, Carrie Jameson Webber, Leah Moses Rubio and Jayme Moses Kelton of Oklahoma City; and great-grandchildren Lauren and Cody Jameson, Benjamin and Keller Webber, Lily and Luca Rubio, and Sloane and Wells Kelton. She is also survived by step-son John Quaid of Wynnewood and step-daughter Sharon Quaid Landis of Phoenix, AZ.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, people consider making a donation to the Davis Public School Foundation, P.O. Box 333, Davis, OK 73030.
