Funeral services for Carlene Mildred Long were held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Sulphur with David George, Al Turner and Lois Helms officiating. Interment followed at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur.
Carlene was born March 16, 1930 in Pauls Valley, OK to the late Arron D. and Alice (Parker) Burleson. She died Friday, April 30, 2021 at her ranch, east of Sulphur; at the age of 91 years 1 month and 14 days. She and John R. Long, Jr were married in Pauls Valley on December 4, 1945. He preceded her in death on June 26, 2004.
The earlier years of Carlene’s life were spent in the Pauls Valley area, prior to moving to Sulphur at the age of 15. She and her husband owned and operated the Long Ranch east of Sulphur. Born during the Great Depression and growing up during WWII, Carlene was never one to shy away from hard work. She quit school at an early age to help her family work as sharecroppers in the Garvin County area. Carlene was very proud of her accomplishments as a Rancher and maintained the operation of the family ranch for 76 years. In 2013, she was chosen by the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association as the Murray County Cattleman of the Year. She was very proud of the award and shared her accomplishment with everyone.
Carlene was also very active in many local civic groups and clubs. She was a member of the General Federation of Women’s Club, the Oklahoma Cattleman’s Association, the Murray County Extension Homemakers Club, the Arbuckle Historical Association and the Sulphur Round Up Club. Of all her memberships, the one that was most important to her, was being a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church.
During her life, Carlene’s pastimes included playing cards, fishing, hunting, bowling, square dancing, karate and researching genealogy.
Survivors include her two daughters, Brenda Cavins & friend Leland Kilgore of Sulphur and Carolyn Johnson & husband Terry, also of Sulphur; four grandchildren, Chris Cavins & wife Carrie of Richmond, TX, Sabrina Cavins Breazeale & husband Ed of Longmont, CO, BJ Johnson & wife Jennifer of Sulphur and Boone Johnson & wife Lauren of Sulphur; as well as eight great-grandchildren, Brycelynn, Brialey, Remington, Kenleigh, Addison, Maggie, Quentin and Finn; and two sisters, Odell Jarman of Pauls Valley and Paulene Musgrove of Edmond.
In addition to her parents and husband, Carlene was preceded in death by one child, Johnelle Long; three sisters and three brothers.
Serving as pallbearers were Chris Cavins, BJ Johnson, Boone Johnson, Remington Johnson, Danny Robledo and Dylan Melton.
