Brenda Jean Cavins

May 12, 1947 — January 4, 2024

Brenda Jean (Long) Cavins was born on May 12, 1947, at the Delay Hospital, in Sulphur, OK, to the late John Richard & Carlene Mildred (Burleson) Long, Jr. She gained her heavenly wings on Thursday, January 4, 2024, in Oklahoma City, following a lengthy illness.

Brenda grew up on the Long Ranch, east of Sulphur. She attended school at Mill Creek until the seventh grade, when she transferred to Sulphur, graduating from Sulphur High School, Class of 1965. After graduating from high school, she went to University of Oklahoma and earned her Bachelor's degree in Education in 1970. Later, she pursued and earned her Master's degree at Oklahoma State University. During her senior year at OU, Brenda married the love of her life, Wendle Ray Cavins, and to this union were born two wonderful children, Chris and Sabrina. The family made their home in Tulsa, where Brenda taught Home Economics for the Tulsa School District and later taught professional education classes at the Tulsa Vo-Tech Center. Wendle preceded her in death on October 28, 1978, due to a tragic car accident.

In 2012, Brenda returned home to Sulphur, living on the family-owned Long Ranch. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Sulphur. She served as president of the Sulphur Sorosis Club, which is the local Chapter of GFWC. She led the club in many service and charitable projects.

Brenda loved her dogs and enjoyed riding horses and helping with the cattle on the family ranch. She also enjoyed playing Canasta and card games of “Dump” on your neighbor with her card friends every Tuesday night.

Survivors include her longtime companion, Leland Kilgore; son, Chris Cavins & wife Carrie of Richmond, TX; daughter, Sabrina (Cavins) Breazeale & husband Ed of Longmont, CO; two grandchildren, Quentin & Finn of Longmont; her sister, Carolynn (Long) Johnson & husband Terry; two nephews, BJ Johnson & wife Jennifer, and Boone Johnson & wife Lauren; as well as great nieces & nephews, Brycelynn, Brialey, Remington, Kenleigh, Addison and Maggie.
