Betty Jo Powers was born April 29, 1939, in Detroit, TX, to the late William C. “Pete” and Julia Ruth (Adams) Freeman. She passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2022, in Sulphur, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and 27 days. Betty and Kenneth Eugene Powers were united in marriage on September 14, 1959, in Red River, TX. He preceded her in death on July 10, 2007.
Betty grew up in Detroit. After graduating from Detroit High School in 1957, she attended nursing school in Ponca City, where she became a Registered Nurse. The earlier years of her career were spent working at the Saint Francis Hospital in Midwest City. After she and her family moved to Sulphur in 1971, Betty spent several years working in Public Health with the Chickasaw Nation. She spent her final years in nursing, working for the Murray County Health Department, retiring in 1990.
Betty was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, caring for their needs. Betty was an avid reader. She always had a good western book or romance novel close by for her reading enjoyment. She also enjoyed watching mystery shows on tv.
Survivors include her son, Joel Powers & wife Belinda of Sulphur; two granddaughters, Jennifer Smith, and Shayna Lenard, both of Sulphur; granddaughter-in-law, Dawn Lenard; as well as eight great-grandchildren, including Steffan and Emery Smith.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by one daughter, Cheryl K. Powers on September 7, 2018; one grandson, Cody Lenard on December 6, 2021; as well as two brothers, Mack, and Kenneth Freeman; and one sister, Donna Carol Freeman.
Graveside funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Sulphur, with Brother Dusk Monetathchi officiating.
Services are “Entrusted To” HALE’S Funeral Home of Sulphur, OK.
