Arlin Dee Akers

Graveside services for Arlin Dee Akers will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, December 16, 2022, at the Dougherty Cemetery, with Pastor Willard McCartney, Jr. officiating.

Arlin was born April 19, 1930, in Dougherty, to the late Johnnie Oscar and Alta Mae (Hale) Akers. He passed on Sunday, December 11, 2022, in McLoud, OK, at the age of 92 years,7 months and 22 days. He and the former Ms. Mildred Jeanette Salmon were married on September 21, 1951, in Gainesville, TX. She preceded him in death on March 19, 2019.

Arlin grew up in Dougherty, graduating from Dougherty High School, Class of 1949. Immediately following high school, he joined the National Guards and served four years, prior to being drafted into the United States Army on February 2, 1951. While serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, Arlin was stationed in Japan. After being Honorably Discharged from the Army on January 27, 1953, he then joined the Army Reserves and served until 1958.

In 1959, Arlin began working for BF Goodrich in Ardmore. In 1965, he took a job in Oklahoma City with the Bendix Corporation. After 19 years with Bendix, Alrin then went to work for General Motors in Oklahoma City, prior to transferring to their Wichita Falls plant in 1987, where he retired in 1995. Upon retiring, he and Mildred moved to Sulphur, where he worked for Sulphur Public Schools in lawn maintenance from 1997 until his final retirement in 1999.

Arlin was a very kind, genuine man. He was very much a family man and maintained close relations with his entire family. He was known to be quite the storyteller and loved to share stories of his youth, especially stories of raising pigs with his Pop Hale. Even at the age of 92, he still possessed a sharp mind. Arlin was a very crafty individual. He enjoyed woodworking. He was known for building very intricate toys, puzzles, and brainteasers, which he gifted to family and friends. Arlin battled diabetes for much of his life.  Although this disease created many issues for him, he never let it slow him down.  He simply pressed on and enjoyed his life.

Survivors include his two sons, Richard A. Akers & wife Terri of Calumet, and Randy D. Akers & wife Susan of Harrah; four grandchildren, Erick Akers, Cheyenne Akers, Riley Akers, and Lacey Barrett; five great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews, including nieces Bobbie McGinness, Kathy Perkins, Karen Favors, and Dian Roetker; two great-nieces Kellie Kubena & her family, and Bettie McGinness; three brothers Darrell Akers & wife Virginia of Sulphur, Harrel Akers of Dougherty, and Doug Akers and wife Margaret of Dougherty; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents and wife, Arlin was preceded in death by his sister, D. Armenta (Akers) McWethy, and his beloved sister-in-law, Hilda Akers.
